The Court of Justice participates in various educational programs for school children that include visits to the courthouses and interaction with the judiciary.
Edmonton
The Court of Justice in Edmonton offers a program for Grade 9 students to support the learning outcomes associated with the Grade 9 social studies curriculum and its focus on governance and rights.
Teachers may book a day to bring their classes to the Law Courts for a self-guided tour. Groups are met by a Clerk of the Court and provided a brief orientation. A brochure is provided to assist in the tour. The program culminates with a 30-minute session in court with a Justice of the Court of Justice who provides comments related to the Grade 9 social studies learning objectives and answers questions from the students.
This program has been offered since 1999. Since its inception thousands of students have participated.
Calgary
Pro Bono Students Canada Elementary School Mock Trial Program
Starting in the spring of 2013, the Justices of the Court of Justice have hosted elementary school students participating in the Pro Bono Students Canada Elementary School Mock Trial Program. The visits to the Calgary Courts Centre typically take place four times a year and involve a tour of the Ceremonial Courtroom, the High Security Courtroom, the Aboriginal Courtroom, and a visit to a “sitting” Court of the Court of Justice.
Other Locations
Other locations in the Province organize visits for school groups on request. Schools can contact the local courthouse to inquire about possible visits.
