New King's Bench General Practice Notes 1-4 - Effective January 1, 2023

Dec 8, 2022

The Court of King’s Bench is consolidating, clarifying and re-issuing its practice directives, in an effort to make them easier to find and understand. As part of this project, a number of directives contained in Notices to Profession and Public are being re-issued in the form of new Practice Notes. Court of King’s Bench General Practice Notes 1 – 4 will come into effect January 1, 2023 and are posted on the Court’s website under the Areas of Law tab, here: https://albertacourts.ca/kb/areas-of-law/general-practice-notes.

These new Practice Notes address gowning, forms of address, courtroom decorum, citation of authorities, Applications Judges’ jurisdiction, judicial dispute resolution, and online/remote hearings.

For the most part, these new Practice Notes are consolidations of current practices. However, the following changes have been made:

  • The Court’s gowning directive has been amended to facilitate accommodations for pregnancy and other personal circumstances.
  • The Court’s forms of address directive has been amended to dispense with the terms “My Lord” and “My Lady”.
  • The Court’s citation directive has been updated to incorporate the most recent edition of the Canadian Guide to Legal Citation (McGill Guide).
