The Honourable Justice Marina Paperny and the Honourable Justice Barbara Lea Veldhuis retire from Alberta Court of Appeal

The Honourable Justice Marina Paperny and the Honourable Justice Barbara Veldhuis have retired from the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Justice Paperny joined the Alberta Court of Appeal in 2001 following five years at the Court of King’s Bench. Her retirement is effective April 29, 2023.

Justice Barbara Lea Veldhuis was appointed to the Alberta Court of Appeal in 2013. She was first appointed to the Provincial Court in 2007 joining the Court of Queen’s Bench in 2011. Her retirement is effective May 1, 2023.

Chief Justice of Alberta, the Honourable Ritu Khullar, thanked both justices for their contributions to the Court and justice system in Alberta.

“We are grateful for your dedication to the administration of justice in Alberta and your years of service on the court. On behalf of your colleagues on the bench, and all Albertans, 'thank you,'” the Chief Justice said. “We wish you well on your retirement from the Alberta Court of Appeal.”

Justice Marina Paperny:

Justice Paperny had worked both as a partner of a law firm and as corporate counsel and chief executive of a private company before her appointment to the bench. She also served as a justice of the Court Martial Appeal Board from May 2019 until her retirement. The gender balance at the Alberta Court of Appeal shifted to a majority of women judges upon Justice Paperny’s appointment in 2001.

Justice Barbara Lea Veldhuis:

Justice Veldhuis specialized in criminal law for many years before her appointment as a judge—as a criminal defence lawyer, Crown prosecutor and senior federal prosecutor. She was chair of the Law Enforcement Review Board immediately before her appointment to the bench.
